“The educated differ from the uneducated as much as the living from the dead.” Aristotle
Isn't it funny how people respond to parents who take their children's education seriously? I have been surprised how people quickly warn parents against the dangers of "pushing" their child academically. It is as though taking the responsibility we have to educate our children in a serious way means that our intention is to make our child "better than" theirs or some other child. When really it is most often about understanding the value of living an educated life. Parents who have children in the Olympics are often considered role models because they put their child's passion and desires above their own. Dedicating a life to a sport is highly respected. Think of all the commercial hoopla surrounding the Olympic athletes and the sacrifices they have heroically made. They are interviewed for newspapers, magazines, and television. They are often considered national heroes. I am a big fan of these events and the diligent children who participate in them. However, I do find it odd that parents who help children dedicate to a sport are honored and parents who do the same academically are considered pushy and elitist. Giving more than lip service to the importance of education shouldn't be a concern for people. It should be a cause for respect, maybe even admiration.
